Chatel is situated in the Haute Savoie region of France on the French / Swiss border around 45 minutes from Evian and Montreux. We recommend you have a car for your summer holiday in Chatel so you can take advantage of the huge variety of places to visit.
Chatel looks totally different in the summer. There are beautiful floral displays from window boxes, baskets and balcony rails. Many restaurants and bars have sun terraces where you can watch the world go by and eat lunch or dinner alfresco style.
Chatel boasts a large variety of excellent shops, many selling hand made and hand painted gifts, toys and furniture. There are supermarkets and specialist shops selling local wines and cheeses and many sports shops selling all the equipment you may need for holidays in both summer and winter.
Alongside the many activities you can enjoy in Chatel and the Abondance Valley, it is a superb base for exploring the wider area. Close by you can visit the historic village of Abondance with its 12th Century abbey. A short drive through spectacular scenery will bring you to the banks of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) where you can take a boat trip along the lake or visit Thonon, Evian, or the medieval port of Yvoire. Also within 1 hour’s drive are the Swiss towns of Montreux and Lausanne with their festivals, galleries and museums and Chateau de Chillon, the beautiful castle made famous by Byron, which sits on the very edge of the lake. Further afield but still within a couple of hours are the beautiful lakeside town of Annecy and the world famous resort of Chamonix Mont Blanc.
